4th October 2024
Our Cygnus provision started this week and there are lots of activities to enhance the learning of our students. Further details of the provision can be found here.
Year eleven geography students went to Birmingham this week to undertake environment surveys and assessments of the accessibility and use of the Bull Ring shopping centre.
The students were a pleasure to be with, and the day was spent visiting various locations around the Bull Ring with surveys undertaken and interviews with pedestrians.
Open evening
On Thursday, the school opened its doors to children in years five and six and their parents to have the opportunity to look around the school and to hear plans from our new head teacher from January, Ms Baxter-Williams.
As usual, it was a busy evening and it was lovely to speak to so many children and their parents who are looking forward to joining us. Subject areas had displays and presentations available and our school prefects did a wonderful job of escorting parents around the school and answering questions about their experiences here. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming school and were especially pleased to offer that welcome to parents who wanted to talk about their children and any additional needs. Chilwell School will do all it can to ensure that children's needs are supported and parents commented on how refreshing it was to hear a supportive approach in comparison with other secondary schools they had visited. We are offering school tours up to the half-term break for parents who were not able to join us at open evening and more detail about booking these can be found here.

New Careers portal
It’s time for our Year 11 pupils to start considering what they will do when they finish school. We have created a ‘Careers Portal’ for parents and guardians with helpful information about open events happening across Nottingham, as well as useful links and apprenticeship vacancies. This will be updated regularly with the latest opportunities in our area.
Holiday activity and Food (HAF) programme
Nottinghamshire County Council will start to take bookings for the 2024 Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF) from the first week in October, ready for the Autumn half term. HAF provides FUNDED activities and food for children receiving benefits related free school meals. These programmes run during the following school holidays: spring (Easter), summer, autumn (October) and Christmas holidays.
Children aged between 5 – 16 years (Reception aged 4 and year 11 inclusive) in receipt of benefits related free school meals are eligible for free holiday activities and food. This is not a food voucher scheme; all activities happen face to face.
Holiday activity listings will be live from the first week in October, with ALL listings advertised by 8th October: Activities and venues | Nottinghamshire County Council
Chilwell sets an example for others with SEND provision
The school was recognised for its strong work with SEND students through a paper commissioned by the NHS, Nottinghamshire County Council and parent carer forum on strategies used to retain students with SEND in educational provision. Over the last couple of years our approach has enabled more students to access mainstream provision regularly and for the school to successfully enable access to specialist provision where students need it. Our flexibility and adaptable approach is partly down to the school remaining free of multi academy trust control and can therefore respond effectively to the needs of our students on an individual basis, using all of our funding for the benefit of our students. The decision by the new government to balance out the school systems and ensure that multi academy trusts are no longer allowed a laissez faire attitude means that local schools, run by and for the community can grow and develop further. Chilwell has demonstrated that it is not only possible to maintain an effective budget, attract new staff and students and invest in a future building project, but is also providing a strong education for all students, with or without special educational needs, that is a model for others to follow.
