Disadvantaged students - Pupil premium funding

Schools receive extra funding to support students in different circumstances and help them achieve. This is known as the ‘Pupil Premium’ Funding. At Chilwell School we use this funding to enhance our academic and pastoral provision for these students. (Please note that allocations are not made for pupils in the sixth form.)

Pupil premium is funding provided to schools by the Government to support pupils within the following categories:

  1. Pupils who are currently registered for Free School Meals
  2. Pupils who have been registered for Free School Meals at any point during the last six years
  3. Pupils in the care of a Local Authority
  4. Pupils who are adopted but have been looked after for one day or more or were adopted from care on or after 30 December 2005 and left care under:
    • a Special Guardianship Order on or after 30 December 2005
    • a Residence Order on or after 14 October 1991
  5. Pupils whose parents are serving with the UK Armed Forces.

As of September 2024 the percentage of Disadvantaged students at Chilwell School is 18%, less than 1% of the school population are looked after children.

Disadvantaged Support

17% of our Disadvantaged pupils have Special Educational Needs. No single intervention provides a complete solution to the complex educational needs of any school and therefore there are many strategies adopted to support our pupils.

The Disadvantaged funding is spent in an integrated and targeted way, to ensure that pupils receive the opportunity for additional support and access to learning opportunities. We chose the classroom approaches and intervention strategies which research has shown works. The progress of these pupils is monitored throughout the year at each assessment point and the strategies are monitored for their effectiveness.

Sutton trust research indicates that effective support comes from improving feedback, reduced class size, early intervention and extending the breadth of the curriculum.
