Chilwell fight hard in County Cup
A fantastic day yesterday for our wonderful Y9 students, as we played the COUNTY CUP FINAL at the salubrious POPLARS SPORTS GROUND in Burton Joyce.
We were up against West Bridgford School, who had already won the SOUTH NOTTS CUP and were reigning COUNTY CUP CHAMPIONS.
The game was managed by MR HOLMES, who made a 7 hour round trip from Somerset to be there for the final.
We went down 1-0, early in the first half, conceding from a corner, then were kept in the game after a heroic goalkeeping display from Y8 Jacob Baldwin.
The second half saw WEST BRIDGFORD score again after excellent play from their NOTTINGHAM FOREST U14 striker.
With around 10 minutes to go MR HOLMES sent on Cobi I and this was the catalyst for a tumultuous final chapter to the game...
Ollie L, sent in a free kick and after a scramble on the line, the ball was headed in to make it 2-1 and give Chilwell some hope of forcing the game to penalties.
Minutes later the frankly brilliant Alfie W skipped down the line on the left, beating two or three players in a mazy run and fired the ball into the far bottom corner. Leading to unbelievable scenes of celebrations from the Chilwell bench and the massed hordes of Chilwell parents on the touchline.
We nearly stole a dramatic winner, before the referee blew up for FULL TIME and straight to the dreaded penalty shoot-out, that has been the curse of English football for so many years.
Unfortunately, we lost the shootout on penalties - losing by 5 to 4.
In my biased opinion, we rode our luck in the first half, but were by far the better team in the second half and on another day would have won the game in normal time.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: All the boys were heroes, but ALFIE W was a sensation from the start to finish.
