On Thursday of this week we held our first Discovery day of the year. It was a lovely day, with opportunities for students in key stage three to explore a range of cultural activities and for students in key stages four and five to take the opportunity to plan the next steps in their education.
Year eight were especially lively, with cooking, dancing and drumming all in one day!
We look forward to the next discovery day which will take place in January.
Remembrance
We stopped the clocks at 11am on Friday to spend time in refection on Remembrance Day. Both quads were filled with students who paused their break in silence and in classrooms, students stood at the sound of the last post played by Mr Batley.
Supporting achievement and supporting behaviour
Year eleven students are currently meeting with members of the senior team to review their progress and preparation for the mock examinations. The discovery day was also a time for students in our sixth form to spend a focussed day looking at aspiration and personal statements. We continue to do everything we can to ensure that students are focussed upon doing their best at school.
We do this through a combination of high expectations and no tolerance of disruption. This applies to everyone in our school. We are fully aware that the police are undertaking Operation Potassium in Beeston town centre and surrounding areas to tackle anti-social behaviour in the evenings and weekends. We have an ongoing programme with our community police and will continue to support them to ensure that we influence student behaviour not only in school but in public too.
It is clear that there is an issue affecting the wider community in Beeston and Chilwell and our school will continue to do everything to ensure decency and honesty are promoted. However, we also appeal to parents to ensure that they are fully in control of their children when out of school. We know that the vast majority of our families want the best for their children and as usual we are seeing the impact of a minority of children, in this case as young as nine, behaving inappropriately.
We want our community be able to operate in a positive environment and so we reach out to all parents to work with the school, the police, youth organisations and transport authorities to ensure that the issues we are seeing in Beeston are eradicated.
