15th May 2020

School has been a busier place this week, not only with the ongoing child care arrangements that we are undertaking and the site maintenance and development work undertaken by our premises team, but also the on site discussions with colleagues about the process of re-opening the school to learning.

I wrote home to you on 12th May and there are currently no significant changes at present to add to that message. I am not committing as yet to a date for the return of our students, even though we are working hard to achieve a safe return for as many as is reasonable.

Schools can only work effectively where there is trust between everyone involved and I am grateful for the ongoing trust that our community puts in the school. This is why it is vital that we give you clear messages that we can carry out. After the announcement of schools returning on Sunday, many of us as headteachers found different information being sent out from government a day later and only last night was guidance sent out to primary schools with further details of what a return to school should look like. This has meant that many primary colleagues have spent time on plans that have today had to be reviewed again.

The guidance issued for primaries last night mentioned that there would be similar advice issued for secondary schools. However, this will not happen for another week. It is unfortunate that the delays in issuing clear guidance and structure has happened a number of times now, with the free school meal vouchers and statements on return to school.

I want to assure parents that we already have a timetable in place, we have identified appropriate teaching spaces, we have arranged for the necessary resources to be available, we have shared our plans with all staff and we are committed to the safe return of your children. I will let you know as soon as I can of when we will have our site open for learning, as when I do, I want you to be able to trust that we will be able to carry it out with safety and clarity of organisation.

I would want you to expect nothing less.

Stay safe.
