There have been incidents of self-quarantining in the local area and the school is monitoring the national and local situation.

It is important to approach the situation in a calm and measured manner. We know that rumour and speculation can bring alarm and distress and we are clear that the school will continue to provide measured and clear advice and guidance to parents and students.

We can do our best to tackle the situation through ensuring that we embed habits of cleanliness and care. At school we are increasing the cleaning rotas and making sure we have facilities available for students to keep up a routine focussed upon personal hygiene.

We will be talking to students in assemblies and tutor time next week about the importance of having tissues and using them at all times for sneezes and coughs, washing hands properly and ensuring those around us do the same.

The guidance from Public Health England includes the following:

• wash your hands often - with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. This is particularly important after taking public transport
• avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
• avoid close contact with people who are sick
• if you feel unwell, stay at home, do not attend work or school
• cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin.
• clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home and work environment
• if you are worried about your symptoms, please call NHS 111. Do not go directly to your GP or other healthcare environment

The school will continue to work normally, but we will be ensuring that the above expectations are reinforced with students every day.

We will inform parents of any circumstances that need a further response. It is vital that everyone takes responsibility for themselves and others, whilst at the same time guarding against rumour and over-reaction. In light of this, we would ask parents to ensure that students come to school with a supply of tissues and where possible, alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
